17/04/2015

It is common knowledge to the Vietnamese people that Hue is the center for rattan and bamboo materials to the Northern and Central provinces of the country. In the city there are two Enterprises which specialize in the collection and treatment of rattan bark; the Hoang Tan Enterprise and the Ngoc Minh Enterprise.

Both bamboo and rattan are core materials for the markets of Ha Tay, Ha Nam, Hai Duong, Hung Yen, Bien Hoa, Dong Nai and Nha Trang where craftsmen and artisans produce a wide variety of handicrafts. The Hoang Tan Enterprise collects twelve hundred to fifteen hundred tons of fresh rattan annually; and the Ngoc Minh Enterprise annually collects from seventeen hundred to two thousand tons of fresh rattan.

Their annual revenue is estimated to be 7.5-9.5 billion VND (US$458 million to $593 million) and 10.5-12.5 billion VND (US$656 million to $781 million), respectively. Throughout the province there are forty-eight small, private enterprises centered mostly in Thuy Xuan, Tay Loc, Phu Hiep and Vi Da hamlets. In addition to processing the materials, they produce high quality rattan furniture such as cabinets, sofa, chairs and tables which are exported worldwide, but mainly to the Japanese and EU markets.

Ngoc Minh and Phu Hoang Enterprises are key to the rattan processing industry of Hue. Annually, the total export of processed rattan is over three hundred tons and the export of bamboo and rattanware is over 500,000 products, to include two hundred varieties of rattan furniture.

For the domestic market much of the rattan products made locally consist of practical items such as packages, flower baskets, brooms and bird cages. The provincial leadership of Thua Thien Hue Province have initiated a long-term plan to preserve and develop the traditional craft villages as a way to enhance historic and cultural values while sustaining a renewable resource.

In this way the provincial authorities aim to combine traditional production and cultural tourism to improve the standard of living and enhance the local economy. Handicraft producers throughout the province find they need to increase productivity and improve product quality while reducing production costs to raise their overall competitiveness for bamboo and rattanware in remain competitive since the opening of the national economy.

The bamboo and rattanware industries of Thua Thien Hue Province employ three strategies to ensure their success. First is a focus on bamboo and rattanware for export to benefit the local markets. Secondly, they aim to strengthen market research and enhance creative designs to suit foreign demands. Lastly is to cooperate with the scientific research community of the Hue University of Fine Arts and the Hue Agriculture and Forestry Colleges to apply scientific and technological advances as a means to develop improved designs with a higher quality product that is also environmentally friendly.
