Bamboo and rattan export sector - Find a stable supply

21/05/2019
Opportunities for Vietnam rattan and bamboo industry are very positive and are expected to rise to 8-10% of the world market. However, in order to seize this opportunity, experts believe that the input material is stable and the quality is very important.
Vietnam currently has over 1,000 bamboo and rattan trade villages

Open market opportunities

Currently, Vietnam has over 1,000 bamboo and rattan trade villages, accounting for 24% of the total number of trade villages in the country. Up to now, bamboo and rattan products have been exported to 130 countries and territories, with an average export turnover of over USD 200 million / year, accounting for about 14% of total export turnover of fine handicrafts. technology.

However, according to Trademap (updated database system of trade situation of countries), Vietnam market share of bamboo and rattan in the world market is only about 3.37%. In particular, two major markets are the US 20%, Japan 16% of the total export value. According to experts of rattan and bamboo industry in Vietnam, there are many development opportunities, capable of capturing 8-10% of the world market and achieving the value of about 1 billion USD in the future.

At the Conference to connect the supply and demand of raw materials for bamboo and rattan industry between Hanoi and the provinces of Nghe An, Ha Tinh and Thanh Hoa, recently organized, Mr. Hoang Xuan Thuy - Director of the Center for Industrial Promotion and Industrial Development Hanoi - said: Some emerging markets in recent years such as China, Spain, Russia, Australia ... tend to import many bamboo and rattan products from Vietnam. Especially, the import turnover of Vietnamese rattan and bamboo products increased by 13.2% on average, and China increased by 40% / year.

Difficult to supply materials

According to Mr. Hoang Xuan Thuy, despite the great opportunity, the biggest difficulty for enterprises (enterprises) is the lack of supply of input materials. Many units have to reject some big export orders. Currently, the main supply of raw materials for rattan and bamboo villages in Hanoi is from the northern mountainous and central provinces and partly imported from abroad. However, this supply is mainly through the way of small quota, low output, frequent changes ... which have badly affected the production activities of enterprises, especially the deployment of large orders.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Luong - Hien Luong Bamboo and Rattan Co., Ltd. - shared that, compared to 2016, raw material price of bamboo and rattan industry increased much. Specifically, for the tree up 15 thousand VND / kg, the price of water hyacinth also increased by 12 thousand VND / kg, so the export orders negotiated with customers faced many difficulties.

Need to synchronize solutions

Before the petition of enterprises, Mr. Nguyen Hong Phong - Deputy Director of the Department of Local Industry and Trade (Ministry of Industry and Trade) - suggested: Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade should actively advise and propose mechanisms and policies to support and preferential treatment, especially prioritizing exploitation and processing to create material areas for bamboo and rattan industry. Enterprises and establishments producing bamboo and rattan products of Hanoi can link investment in production workshops in the localities of 3 provinces: Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Ha Tinh to make use of raw materials and labor, reduce costs and contribute to creating a complete and effective supply and demand chain ...

According to experts, to develop bamboo and rattan industry in a sustainable way, in addition to ensuring sufficient supply of input materials, close coordination between craft villages, people, businesses and management agencies is required. state, offering synchronous solutions such as planning for material areas, building centers for processing, preserving materials and innovating product designs.

Every year our country consumes 400-500 million bamboo trees and from 600-800 tons of raw rattan and rattan to produce consumer goods and export.
