Exploiting the potential of Vietnamese handicrafts in international markets

Towards a turnover of 4 billion USD by 2025

Vietnamese handicraft products are in high demand in international markets. In recent years, there has been a relatively high level of export growth, about 10% per year on average, making a significant contribution to the country's export turnover increase.

In 2019, the export turnover of handicrafts and handicrafts reached 2.35 billion USD, of which there were a number of items with great export value such as: ceramic products reached 539 million USD; rattan products with carpet reached 484 million USD; handmade embroidery and textile products reached USD 139 million.

In the context of the Covid-19 epidemic, the export turnover of handicrafts still maintains a decent growth. Specifically, in the first 7 months of 2020, exports of ceramics products reached $ 309 million, up 3.4% over the same period in 2019; carpet rattan products reached 250 million USD, up 10.8%; handmade embroidery and textile products reached 90 million USD, up 11%.

Developing rural occupations, craft villages have created jobs and incomes for over 2.3 million rural workers, contributing to the transformation of the rural labor structure in the direction of shifting from low-income agricultural workers to professions with higher income.

The income level of occupational workers is 2 to 3 times higher than that of pure agricultural workers. The poverty rate in an occupation area is much lower than the national poverty rate.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Thanh Nam assessed that the Vietnamese handicraft industry has great potential for development, demonstrating the creativity of Vietnamese people. "Handicraft items are both a product and a work of art, so they have a very high value" - Mr. Nam said.

Meanwhile, the consumer trend is increasingly towards environmentally friendly products, goods originating from natural materials such as rattan, bamboo, sedge, water hyacinth ... Handicraft products are also There is a great opportunity for market expansion and export growth when major importing countries in the world such as the US and the European Union have recently imposed higher tariff barriers on Chinese products. National.

Along with that, the reduction of taxes from free trade agreements and measures to strengthen the capacity of exporting enterprises, improve product design and design, enhance trade promotion, standard conformity. international ... is expected to promote the growth of exports of Vietnamese handicrafts to over 12% / year, the export turnover may reach US $ 4 billion by 2025.

Promote the development of raw material areas, add value

Despite the huge growth potential, the handicraft industry of Vietnam still faces many outstanding and limited problems. Accordingly, infrastructure has not been invested synchronously, degraded, lack of infrastructure works for tourism development, conservation of cultural space for craft villages. The production development is also small, lacks the linkage between the actors in the value chain; limited technical training on basic, innovative design ideas and new product development. Trade promotion possibilities are still limited.

In particular, the requirement of international standard conformity is increasing, while the number of Vietnamese enterprises meeting the standards and standards is still very few. The role of industry association of vocational associations is still weak, there is a lack of association between associations and businesses, and between enterprises and businesses.

Deputy Minister Tran Thanh Nam also pointed out that the issue of raw materials for the handicraft industry is also facing many difficulties. Typically, the price of dried water hyacinth has increased to 27,000 VND / kg, but it is also very scarce; The land source for making pottery products is also increasingly depleted due to the impact of urbanization ...

Therefore, in the coming time, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will develop concentrated material areas to ensure the source of raw materials at the place of production of trades and trade villages. In which, focusing on the production of key products such as bamboo and rattan weaving, embroidery, ceramics ... in localities where conditions are available.

Mr. Le Duc Thinh, Director of Department of Economic Cooperation - Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development also informed that in the near future, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will review and evaluate the current situation of rural industries and craft villages. now to build criteria, evaluate and classify craft villages; complete the construction of a project on conservation and development of craft villages in the period of 2021-2025 and submit it to the Prime Minister for approval for implementation. At the same time, promoting research and application of science and technology in production to improve productivity, quality and diversify products under the motto of combining advanced technology with traditional technology.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will also effectively carry out vocational training, step up the design and development of new products to create added value and export turnover; promote effectively trade promotion and international standards conformity; promote the development of trade village tourism.
